Background
SkQ1 is a mitochondria-targeted antioxidant: plastoquinone linked through a decyl chain to a lipophilic triphenylphosphonium cation, which carries it into mitochondria. It is structurally related to MitoQ, which uses ubiquinone in place of plastoquinone, and shows less pro-oxidant activity in studies. It has been developed under the name Visomitin.
Pharmacology
SkQ1’s antioxidant activity reflects its reduction to SkQ1H2 at the Complex I IQ or Complex III Qi site. Both reductions diminish electron diversion to oxygen, attenuating superoxide formation. The resulting SkQ1H2 is oxidized back to SkQ1 at the second (flavin) site of Complex I, previously described for MitoQ10.
Benzyl Alcohol Warning
Benzyl alcohol is a skin and eye irritant and should be handled with caution. Wear eye protection if there is reason to believe the contents of this solution may come into contact with your eyes.
