Background

SkQ1 is a mitochondria-targeted antioxidant shown in rodent models to promote healthy eyesight,[1] increased lifespan (in males)[2] and resistance to age and disease-related deterioration. Primarily it is being investigated under the name Visomitin, and for its potential to benefit to ocular function. However, SkQ1 appears a promising candidate for the treatment of Rheumatoid arthritis[4] and other unrelated conditions. We hope to encourage research by allowing researchers to buy SkQ1.

SkQ1 works similarly to CoQ10, but with superiority in multiple regards: it is both extremely potent and less prone to exacerbating oxidative stress. CoQ10 is well recognized for promoting heart health, reducing cancer risk and being protective against cognitive decline. Indeed, SkQ1 is shown to prevent the formation of β-amyloids.[5]

Pharmacology

In studies, SkQ1’s antioxidant modes reflect its reduction to SkQ1H2 at Complex I IQ or Complex III Qi site. Both reductions diminish electron diversions to oxygen thus attenuating superoxide formation. Resulting SkQ1H2 oxidizes back to SkQ1 at the second (flavin) Complex I site, previously indicated for MitoQ10.

SkQ1 works similarly to that of COQ10 (popularly known as MitoQ) but presents less pro-oxidant activity. It shows downstream anti-inflammatory effects and protective effects in various models.

Pharmacokinetics

Current data suggests that oral administration of SkQ1 is inadvisable, with sublingual or buccal administration producing better results. SkQ1, used topically or injection to the organ of interest, is also described in rat models as a procedure to protect from damage.

Benzyl Alcohol Warning

Benzyl alcohol is a skin and eye irritant and should be handled with caution. Wear eye protection if there is reason to believe the contents of this solution may come into contact with your eyes.
